Sweet – The Ballroom Blitz
Billy Preston – Will It Go Round In Circles
Redman – Tonight’s da Night
Beck – Corvette Bummer
David Bowie – Love You Till Tuesday
Candi Staton – Evidence
Mantronix – Needle to the Groove
ESG – Dance
Biz Markie – Let Me Turn You On
Brass Construction – The Message (Inspiration)
Blo – Chant To Mother Earth

I put this mix together pretty quickly and after the fact, I realized some of these songs either have been sampled or have sampled some pretty cool songs. I’ve actually been meaning to put together a mix of awesome songs that have been sampled by hip hop over the years. Unintentionally, I half way did that here.

Ok, so Beastie Boys sampled one of the lines in this Sweet track – see if you can spot it.
Billy Preston was the 5th Beatle so wtf. This is a great song.
This Redman track samples Isaac Hayes’ “A Few More Kisses To Go“.
Beck’s Corvette Bummer is a b-side from the Mellow Gold days. You can get it on the Loser single.
The Bowie track is from his first record I think. At the very least it’s from when he was very young. The whole record is amazing and not like any other Bowie record.
Candi Staton has been slept on as far as I know. I couldn’t find the album I have on iTunes or Amazon.
Mantronix is some serious old school. Beck sampled this track. Won’t be hard to spot it.
ESG has been sampled a lot but not this song that I’m aware of.
This Biz track is just a feel good hit from back in the day from All Samples Cleared. It blatantly samples “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now“.
N.W.A. sampled Brass Construction on “I Ain’t Tha 1“.
And finally this Blo track is apparently a popular one for the genre and it’s on an album that’s out of print and a bit pricey when found. You can get the track though on the Nigeria 70 compilation.

metal spider webs video

black mold is an instrumental project by singer/songwriter chad van gaalen.
it’s pretty different from his other recordings.
after a couple listens, the album started to grow on me…
or at least some of the songs did… not all.

this is a video for metal spider webs, the first track off the album.

(chad does all his own artwork. pretty impressive)

mixtape #7

most of these bands are new to me.
and i know nothing about them.
they all have a similar vibe though.

liars is an exception – i have all their albums & eps.
i’m looking forward to their upcoming record Sisterworld.
i can’t say i love all their releases but i am always drawn back to them as a band and listen again and again.

i do know of Blank Dogs. and again, like liars, i can’t say i like everything but i recently took another listen and this track caught me enough to buy it.

Hollow Tongues is a different vibe from the other songs but i still like it in the mix.
i don’t know anything about this band. stereogum had two songs for download.
i opted to only keep this one. i couldn’t make it through the other.
check out both tracks HERE.

NNF159Amy favorite in this find of new music hands down is Vibes. this song is just rediculous enough for me to love it. not rediculous in a bad way. just the lo-fi production and the lyrics – at least what i could make out. just made me laugh. plus the cover for this 7″ is pretty epic.
i might have to order it HERE just to have it.

none of this is exactly xmas music but i can’t say i really like xmas music.
i do have one song that i will post separately that is xmas-y and it’s pretty radical.

i finally found this song!!!
sounds like the person ripped it from vinyl.
which kind of makes it even better.

mixtape #4

ok so here’s mixtape #4.
i’m steering away from the hip hop & beat oriented sound of the previous mixtapes. this installment has some pretty obscure indie gems on it i have to say.

the first track is by Avey Tare (of Animal Collective) taken from a comp called Living Bridge. then we have The Welcome Wagon’s epic hand clapping, foot stomping Jesus loving tune, followed by Bauhaus’ “Boys” which is the b-side on their famous goth genre creating single Bela Lugosi’s Dead. then Cheeseburger killing it with “Jellybean”. next is two of my favorite 90′s bands: Sebadoh with a cover of The Residents’ “Moisture” and Pavement with a Slanted and Enchanted era b-side. The next 3 bands i think i discovered via stereogum.com. A little shoegazer tune by Black Tambourine, Calico Horse covering Radiohead and covering them extremely well i might add, and then The Durutti Column who were one of the bands on Factory Records, who’s first release was Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures. Next are The Crimea and Kaito, bands which i discovered when i used to go to the record store and buy shit that just looked cool. Finishing it off is Plants and Animals, which my iTunes DJ reminded me of the other day.

mixtape #4

Avey Tare – I’m Your Eagle Kisser
The Welcome Wagon – But For You Who Fear My Name
Bauhaus – Boys
Cheeseburger – Jellybean
Sebadoh – Moisture
Black Mountain – Druganaut
Pavement – So Stark (You’re a Skyscraper)
Black Tambourine – Black Car
Calico Horse – Idioteque (Radiohead cover)
The Durutti Column – Sketch for Summer
The Crimea – Opposite Ends
Kaito – ‘Fresno Song’
Plants and Animals – Good Friend

Beck’s “Harry Partch”

here’s the short story.
some moron from a band that sucks
who’s name i’m not even going to mention
dissed Radiohead for a song they did called Harry Patch
who was the last surviving UK veteran of WWI until his recent passing at 111

this guy thought they wrote the song about the composer
Harry Partch and said that Radiohead were
“brazenly and arbitrarily associating [themselves]
with things that [they] know people consider cool”

which is totally fucking stupid.

instead of recanting his statement,
he makes more of an ass of himself
by dissing Beck for no apparent reason.

which is totally fucking stupid.

so what did our friend Beck do?
he posted an epic 10min+ song on his site
entitled… yes, that’s right… Harry Partch
in homage to the composer and directly
in the face of this idiot

well played Mr. Hansen.

check out the track HERE
and make sure to check out beck.com
for other rad songs posted on his Record Club page
and you can also get radiohead’s track HERE for £1
