upcoming show

THIS WAS SENT OUT FROM THE GALLERY TODAY!

We are happy to present ‘As Serious of Your Life Is’ – our first show by Los Angeles artist Joe Mckay. Joe creates wonderfully clever and thought provoking collages with a bare bones aesthetic that, in many cases, guides the viewer just enough to a point of departure… to a place where the viewer is left with a playful curiosity and a need to read between the lines… sometimes quietly serious, many times funny, this will prove to be quite a fun show.

In the project room of the gallery, we are very happy to present ‘Sleep to Dream’ – five beautiful photographs by Claire Sloan. The photos are from a series in which she takes 6 – 9 hour exposures of herself sleeping. Its an amazing series, all done on medium format film, printed with a lightjet and mounted on sintra. Currently studying at UC Davis, she began shooting photographs at 14 years old and is now pursuing a degree in art. This will be her first show in Los Angeles.

Join us on the 12th of December, 2009 from 6 – 10pm for the opening reception with the artists, a special guest DJ and some familiar faces.

mixtape #4

ok so here’s mixtape #4.
i’m steering away from the hip hop & beat oriented sound of the previous mixtapes. this installment has some pretty obscure indie gems on it i have to say.

the first track is by Avey Tare (of Animal Collective) taken from a comp called Living Bridge. then we have The Welcome Wagon’s epic hand clapping, foot stomping Jesus loving tune, followed by Bauhaus’ “Boys” which is the b-side on their famous goth genre creating single Bela Lugosi’s Dead. then Cheeseburger killing it with “Jellybean”. next is two of my favorite 90′s bands: Sebadoh with a cover of The Residents’ “Moisture” and Pavement with a Slanted and Enchanted era b-side. The next 3 bands i think i discovered via stereogum.com. A little shoegazer tune by Black Tambourine, Calico Horse covering Radiohead and covering them extremely well i might add, and then The Durutti Column who were one of the bands on Factory Records, who’s first release was Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures. Next are The Crimea and Kaito, bands which i discovered when i used to go to the record store and buy shit that just looked cool. Finishing it off is Plants and Animals, which my iTunes DJ reminded me of the other day.

Beck’s “Harry Partch”

here’s the short story.
some moron from a band that sucks
who’s name i’m not even going to mention
dissed Radiohead for a song they did called Harry Patch
who was the last surviving UK veteran of WWI until his recent passing at 111

this guy thought they wrote the song about the composer
Harry Partch and said that Radiohead were
“brazenly and arbitrarily associating [themselves]
with things that [they] know people consider cool”

which is totally fucking stupid.

instead of recanting his statement,
he makes more of an ass of himself
by dissing Beck for no apparent reason.

which is totally fucking stupid.

so what did our friend Beck do?
he posted an epic 10min+ song on his site
entitled… yes, that’s right… Harry Partch
in homage to the composer and directly
in the face of this idiot

well played Mr. Hansen.

check out the track HERE
and make sure to check out beck.com
for other rad songs posted on his Record Club page
and you can also get radiohead’s track HERE for £1

big bills

i didn’t even know these existed!
these kind of make $2 bills not as cool.
all these bills were recalled in 1969 but you can still buy them on ebay.

$500 features portrait of William McKinley – 25th President
$1000 features portrait of Grover Cleveland – 24th President
$5000 features portrait of James Madison – 4th President
$10000 features portrait of U.S. Treasury Secretary Chase

there’s also a $100,000 bill but it was for government use only.
